We move a lot. Every day. In all types of weather. So it’s safe to say that we are prepared for almost any scenario that one would run into when moving ( Cue angry dog running after us and tackling us to the ground!) However, we don’t expect you to be the experts, so with the help of Huffington Post and US News ,we’ve compiled a list of the 5 Best tips you need to know when moving in the winter.

Layers, Layers, and more layers

While you are packing and transporting boxes from the warm indoors to the freezing outdoors ( if you live in Minnesota like us, that is), you may want to reconsider wearing that puffy down coat. First off, you’d be pretty angry if you got a rip in it. Second of all, dressing in layers will feel less bulky than your winter coat, and if you get warm, you can remove one layer at a time. Also, don’t forget to buy some thin gloves with grips on them that will keep your hands warm, and keep boxes from slipping out of your hands.

Get Started Early

Since it gets dark so much earlier in the winter, you might be lacking in daylight hours during your move. To take the most advantage of the daytime hours, get started with packing early in the day so that you can call it a night fairly early, before it gets too dark. This will allow you to stay safer, since you won’t have to worry about taking loads outside when it’s slippery and dark. Plus, the temperatures are sure to be more comfortable during the daytime hours as well.

Don’t pack winter supplies.

Keep items such as a shovel, ice scraper, salt and winter accessories like gloves and hats in the car with you. If there is a lot of snow on the ground, you may have to dig a path to your new apartment when you arrive. Instead of going through boxes, you’ll have the shovel out and ready to go. If the sidewalk leading to your apartment is icy, throw salt on the ground. This will melt the ice and keep you and your fellow movers safe.

Board the dog and cat.

Boarding your pets can be a huge time saver, believe it or not. You won’t constantly be worrying about them escaping when the mover (accidentally) forgets to close a gate, and you can have some peace of mind that they will be well taken care of until you are settled in their new home.  Also, moves can sometimes be traumatizing for pets, so it will be important that you can give them some one on one time when introducing them to their new home as well. And lastly, depending on where you live, the winter months are cold!! Keep them safe and sound in a spot like ADOGO PET HOTEL– its like a vacation for your pets!

We know that moving in the winter can be a pain, but it is sometimes unavoidable. With these tips, you can make the best out of your winter move.

Make Something Warm to Drink

You, your family members and your moving crew will probably be craving something nice and warm to drink while packing, moving and unpacking in the winter weather. Consider packing your coffee maker and supplies last so that you can make coffee, or use your slow cooker to keep a batch of hot cocoa or apple cider on hand. You can always use disposable coffee cups if you have already packed all of your mugs away.
