The Ultimate Moving Checklist

Moving can feel overwhelming, but breaking it down into manageable steps makes all the difference. Here's our week-by-week guide to a smooth move.

6-8 Weeks Before

  • Get quotes: Contact at least 3 moving companies. Ask about insurance, timing, and what's included.
  • Declutter: Go room by room. Donate, sell, or toss anything you don't need at your new place.
  • Create a moving binder: Keep all estimates, contracts, and receipts in one place.
  • Notify your landlord: If you're renting, give proper notice per your lease.

Professional movers preparing boxes

4-6 Weeks Before

  • Book your movers: The earlier you book, the better your options for timing.
  • Start packing non-essentials: Seasonal items, books, decor, and rarely-used kitchen items.
  • Update your address: USPS, banks, subscriptions, insurance, employer, and doctors.
  • Transfer utilities: Schedule disconnection at old address and connection at new address.

2-4 Weeks Before

  • Pack room by room: Label every box with contents and destination room.
  • Photograph electronics: Before disconnecting, snap photos of cable setups.
  • Confirm with movers: Verify date, time, and any special instructions.
  • Prepare an essentials box: Toiletries, medications, chargers, snacks, important documents.

Moving Week

  • Finish packing: Leave out only what you'll need in the final days.
  • Clean your old home: Especially important if you're getting a deposit back.
  • Do a final walkthrough: Check every closet, cabinet, and drawer.
  • Charge devices: You'll need your phone accessible on moving day.

Moving Day

  • Be present: Walk the movers through your home and point out fragile items.
  • Keep valuables with you: Important documents, jewelry, and medications stay in your car.
  • Check every room: Before leaving, walk through one last time.
  • Tip your movers: It's customary to tip $20-40 per mover for a job well done.

After the Move

  • Unpack essentials first: Kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms are the priority.
  • Check for damage: Inspect belongings and document any issues promptly.
  • Meet your neighbors: A quick hello goes a long way.
  • Update your driver's license: Most states require this within 30 days.
